Metal powder feedstock to Additive Manufacturing should be spherical in shape with a wide distribution to ensure minimal voids in the packed powder bed. This webinar presents the characterization of the quality of metal powder feedstock to Additive Manufacturing relative to the powder shape using automated static or dynamic image analysis by optical photography. It describes the methods to measure powder shape parameters that can identify potentially detrimental powder characteristics and specifically describes how to identify and quantify the proportion of agglomerates/satellites and other irregularly shaped non-spherical powder particles in a powder batch.
The proportion of these detrimental non-spherical particles will affect the Flowability and Spreadability of the feedstock as well as the mechanical properties of the finished metal powder parts. This procedure follows ASTM Standard Guide F3571-22. See https://www.astm.org/f3571-22.html
